The California Mood

The California Mood

Maybe it’s just me (that’s always possible) but there is not much joy and happiness to be found in and around the sunny side of the country that is California.  A perfect example would be last Saturday.  After an entire week of rain and wind and hail, just basically nasty weather, you would think once the sun came out people would be happy to be able to get out and go about their business.  Over the span of six hours last week I came to the conclusion that there were few truly happy people out that day.  Even the store clerks seemed less cheery than normal.  Smiles seemed few and far between, and the more I noticed it the more I noticed it affected me as well.

I’ve lived through the really cold winter months when going outside meant braving 10 degree temperatures and being cold all the time.  Here in California, or Southern California anyway, that doesn’t happen.  It rains about twenty days out of the year and then the weather is near nirvana the rest of the year.  So what’s the problem?

I’m not a doctor but I honestly believe that the people here are vitamin D addicts and when they haven’t gotten hopped up on their daily fix of sunshine it’s like they go through solar withdrawl.  Worse yet, it seems to require a substantial recharge to get people back to normal.  Just one good dose of sunshine doesn’t seem to do it.  Maybe the malls here need to install some sun lamps for shoppers to walk under.  Perhaps that would be enough to recharge peoples solar cells to help them make it through the week.  Or maybe the car manufacturers can come up with a way to incorporate something in your car so you can get rejuiced while you drive too and from work.

I’m certain I don’t have the perfect answer but I know it is an issue, you can see it on a persons face.  You can see it in the way they walk, in the way they talk to others, and sadly, in the way they drive.  So my prescription for a better tomorrow is to start solar juice as soon as possible.  I think even as little as twenty minutes has been shown to have a positive effect on a person.  So to everyone out there, get out there and hit the sunmill and recharge those batteries.
